Eco Warrior Story
This portrait is part of a series of artworks on the subject of identity using an ethnographic methodology. The sitter is living in the Okavango Delta and the first of his family to be in the preservation of the ecological balance of this unique region on Northern Botswana. He is a runner and tracker whose ancestors were until recently hunter gatherers. The vivid colours of the birds he protects are painted into his face, the African Rock Kestrel is part of his cheek and the elephant is in his mind, showing the interdependency of humans and animals. On his forehead is a rendition of his beloved Okavango from satellite images and the background is the colour of the Botswana’s national flag representing water. Global warming issues mean that water levels in the Delta are diminishing every year threatening the survival of all its dependents.

Price: £55.00

About the Artwork
This original piece explores the quiet strength and silent struggle many women carry. It speaks to the way truth is often tucked away—unshared, unseen, or softened for the comfort of others. The layered textures and muted tones reflect the inner world of a woman who holds so much within, even when the world doesn’t ask to hear it.
A tribute to the voices still finding their way forward, Unspoken invites the viewer to witness not just what is shown, but what is hidden.
Title: Standing Tall
Morris Island lighthouse in South Carolina
Artist : Andy Cockeram

After retirement from a career in corporate life in the motor industry, Andy spends much of his time walking in the Devon countryside, indulging in his two passions, art and military history. As chairman of the British Modern Military History Society, Andy and his team have raised many thousands of pounds for military charities through talks and the publication of 3 books in it Glimpses of War series. Andy lives with his wife Jane and their cat Rapha, and has 2 grown up children who live near London.
I am not an Artist
Patricia Ahern
But….. I always wondered if I could be, as I never tried. My friend knowing about my desire to try, gave me a gift of a full artist set, easel and all, but sadly it never got used.
In 2010, when travelling around South America, I met a lovely fun lady from Birmingham called Linda Jackson, she was an artist, who had sold up and decided, before it was too late, she’d travel as much of the world as she could, for me that inspiring in itself! We kept in touch. In 2015 I went to visit her in India and there in her kitchen I shared my secret desire to try my hand at painting. So Lindiloo as I called her, immediately rose from her chair saying, no time like the present, you’ll have your very first art lesson here in India. Much to my amusement, along with I must admit resistance, she grabbed her easel stand and paints and then the things that happened to be closest to her, which as you can see was, a candle, spring onion, tomato and potato, and an egg. (I wonder if you can make out which one is which?)
That familiar voice of doubt was strong in me and I was nervous but Lindiloo was having none of it, the cat was out of the bag and as much as I tried, she wasn’t letting it back in!! We had an hour or so together and then much to my dismay she just left me there, on my own in the kitchen painting, for another hour or so, of course with clear instructions.
And what you see here was the result of my first, and last, art lesson! I haven’t picked up a painting brush since!!
I have spent the last few days doing a “clear out for clarity” at home and found it, and instead of continuing to hide it away, after 10 years I now have somewhere to show it off and tell it’s story!
Thank you Tara for providing a space where I can share my piece called “I’m not an artist” kitchen painting or sketch or drawing or whatever one would call it, to be honest I’m not even sure!
But it’s art, from my first art lesson which was fun at the time, and it’s been fun sharing it with you now!
I also told myself all my life I am not creative – and I was wrong about that.
Maybe I’m wrong about this too!
Watch this space, lol

Drawn Together – June 2026
In June 2026, The Kakuma Art Project brought together art students from St Mary’s Calne in the UK and students from several schools in Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kenya, for a unique international workshop called Drawn Together.
The workshop was led in the UK by portrait artist Alastair Barford and in Kakuma by resident refugee artist Kuachi Gai. Each student received a photograph and a personal letter from a student in the other country, using these as inspiration to create a portrait. The project encouraged not only artistic development but also connection, empathy and friendship across continents.
To demonstrate the portrait techniques he wanted his students to use, Alastair created a drawing of Wal Gatluak, one of the young artists from Kakuma.
About Wal
Hello, my name is Wal . I am South Sudanese, 14 years old, and I have been living in Kakuma for three years. I had no art experience before joining the Creative Souls Community art sessions.
I am glad that I can now see the progress I have made and the confidence I am gaining. Joining the art sessions with the UK young artists gives me a strong feeling of excitement and motivation. It is a great opportunity to interact, share ideas and learn from each other.
Best wishes,
Wal
