THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE VIOLENT

BIEM GAI

This emotionally charged painting by refugee artist Biem explores

the contrasting realities of life in Kakuma. On one hand, it reflects

the initial hope of finding shelter and safety. On the other, it reveals

the harsh consequences of dwindling aid, hunger, desperation, and

rising crime.

In the lower part of the artwork, a figure returning from the market

is ambushed by men wielding sticks, an unsettling reminder of the

everyday dangers faced by many. Biem challenges us to look

beyond the surface, and to see the complex and painful truths of

survival in the camp.
