MARIAMU BYADUNIA
Mariamu painted a poignant and unflinchingly realistic scene of
young children in the camp, many of them orphans, risking their
health each day to walk, often barefoot, across the rubbish dump in
search of plastic bottles to sell. In the corner, you can see the
weighing scale where their finds are measured. The few Kenyan
shillings they earn might be just enough to bring a little food home
for their families. Every step comes with danger, and risk as snakes,
and fatal scorpions hide among the rubbish.
