A BETTER LIFE DANIEL BUTOTO

A BETTER LIFE

DANIEL BUTOTO

Daniel chose to depict his journey to Kalobeyei Camp, next door to

Kakuma. He was forced to leave his country because of famine. In

his painting, he shows the courage it takes for refugees to make that

heart-wrenching decision, to leave everything they know, and

sometimes even family members, behind. Many travel for miles,

even with disabilities, in search of safety. The figure in the

foreground is too distraught to leave, having just buried their child.

On the left, refugees arrive at Kalobeyei Settlement carrying with

them the fragile hope of a better life.
