POURING BOWLS DEN MIN YANG

POURING BOWLS

DEN MIN YANG

In this painting, Den remembers a happy time from his childhood,

which contrasts with his experience of life in a Kakuma Refugee

Camp. In camp, all bowls are made of plastic but in his childhood,

bowls were made of hardened mango skins and were brightly

decorated.

An especially exciting time for him as a child was when his mother

would mix milk and water in these lovely bowls and let him drink

the sweet liquid through a bamboo straw. The straw in the painting

is broken, being separated from family is one of the toughest

challenges for many refugees.
