WAIT IN LINE

DANIEL BUTOTO

This painting reflects the monthly endurance refugees faced to

collect rations from the World Food Programme. It meant rising

before dawn and standing in line for hours, only to risk the supplies

running out before reaching the front. The wait was made harder by

the presence of Kenyan police, who patrolled the queues and

sometimes struck people without cause. It was a day no one looked

forward to – yet they had to endure it. Month after month, they

stood, and waited in line because survival depended on it
