Dear Remarkable Young Woman

Dear Remarkable Young Woman,
Although we have never met, I want you to know that someone, many thousands of miles away, believes in you with all their heart.
As I write this, I don’t know your name, your favourite colour, or what makes you laugh. I don’t know what dreams fill your heart when you close your eyes at night.
But I know one thing with complete certainty:
The world is better because you are in it.
Your life matters. Your voice matters. Your dreams matter. Every human life is a miracle and has incredible value, including yours.
When I heard about Kakuma Refugee Camp and School, I didn’t think about what you have lost because that’s very difficult for me to imagine . Instead, I thought about what you have grown inside you: resilience, courage, kindness, intelligence, hope and a strength that is far greater and will serve you so much more than you can imagine today.
Life has asked you to carry burdens that no child should ever have to carry. But I want you to know something that I hope you will remember for the rest of your life:
You are not defined by the hardest thing that has happened to you. You are defined by the person you choose to become.
Please don’t ever stop dreaming.
Dream dreams that seem impossible.
Dream dreams that make other peop
le smile because they think they are too big.
Dream about becoming a teacher, a doctor, an engineer, an artist, a scientist, a leader, an entrepreneur—or perhaps something the world has never seen before – whatever inspires you. Every great achievement in history began as a dream in someone’s heart.
Please never allow anyone to tell you that your dreams are too ambitious…
They are not.
Every difficult day you overcome is quietly teaching you something. Every challenge is helping you build resilience. Every obstacle you overcome is making you wiser, stronger and kinder. One day, you will look back and realise that the strength you were building was preparing you for a future you couldn’t yet see.
I have two wonderful sons of my own, and more than anything else, I hope they grow into kind people who make the world a little better than they found it. I believe that success isn’t measured by how much money we earn or how many possessions we own.
Real success is measured by how man
y lives we touch with kindness.
I hope that one day you discover that too.
Perhaps, years from now, when your own life is filled with opportunities, you will remember that there were strangers who believed in you before they even knew your name. I hope you will then become that person for another little girl who needs hope.
That is how kindness changes the world.
Sometimes life can make it seem as though there is more cruelty than goodness. It can make us wonder whether anyone truly cares.
Please believe me when I tell you this:
There are millions of good people in our world.
People who care deeply about children and people they have never met.
People who quietly give their time, money, love and encouragement simply because they believe every child deserves hope, safety and the chance to dream.
You may not always see them.
But they are there.
And one day, I hope you will be
come one of them too.
There is one thought that has carried me through many difficult moments in my own life, and I would love to share it with you:
Your circumstances tell you where you are today. They do not tell you where you can go tomorrow.
Never let anyone convince you that your future has already been decided.
It hasn’t.
Your story is still being written by you.
Every page is a new opportunity to choose courage instead of fear, hope instead of despair, kindness instead of anger and belief instead of doubt.
I truly believe that one day you will discover just how powerful you are.
Not because you never faced hardship, but because you learned how to rise every single time life knocked you down.
One day, your strength may become someone else’s hope.
One day, your compassion may change another person’s life.
One day, your story may inspire hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of people to believe in themselves too.
Imagine how incredible that would be.
So keep learning.
Keep asking questions.

Keep smiling whenever life gives you a reason.

Keep laughing.
Keep helping others.
Be curious about the world.
Be kind to yourself.
Be brave enough to believe in yourself, especially on the days when that feels hardest.
And whenever you begin to doubt yourself, remember this:
The stars shine brightest in the darkest skies.
I hope that many years from now you will look back and smile, because you discovered something extraordinary.
The little girl who sometimes wondered if she was enough became a woman who brought hope, kindness and courage to countless other peo
ple.
I believe with all my heart that this is possible.
Never stop believing in yourself.
Because I already believe in you.
With love, hope, and every good wish for your future,
Katie
